The Prism of Eroticism--Passion, Art, Therapy, Science
Eroticism: We know it when we see it, and certainly when we feel it--but what exactly is it?
Sexologists agree that it has biological, psychological, and cultural components. But how much of each component? And how do these interact with each other?
Here's our chance to get a deeper exposure to eroticism in all its complexity.
We are offering CEUs for MFT/LCSW re-licensure, along with AASECT CEUs. We will be offering BBS CEUs for plenaries and pre-conference workshops.
This was a great conference, with excellent speakers. If you missed it, you missed a fun time.

2:00-5:00 PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS
Workshop A: FROM PROBLEM TO PUBLICATION: TURNING
CLINICAL PROBLEMS INTO QUALITATIVE RESEARCH PROJECTS
Janice Swanson, R.N., Ph.D.; Maria Luisa Yepiz Flaherty, Ph.D.
Sex educators and therapists are continually faced with tough clinical
problems. The narratives found in client interviews (and our observations
about them) are a rich source of clinical data; these are essential elements
in carrying out qualitative research. This workshop will examine the steps
that create qualitative research, from clinical problem to publication,
using examples from the presenters' own research. We will include: how
to transform common clinical problems into research problems; how to write
a grant proposal; sources of funding; finding an Institutional Review Board
for approval; carrying out the research project; writing the report; and
getting it published.
Workshop B: ENHANCING CLINICAL SKILLS: INTIMACY- BASED SEX THERAPY
Carol Ellison, Ph.D.
Many therapists have been trained in a medical model that labels sexual
problems as "dysfunctions" and defines therapy success primarily in terms
of regained physical functioning. Dr. Ellison will present an alternative
therapy model in which success is defined primarily in terms of enhanced
ability to create mutual pleasure, satisfaction and intimate interludes.
Using case examples, she will present her conceptualization of sexual problems
and the intimacy-based framework she uses to interview clients and intervene
in their relationships. Workshop participants will be given opportunities
to consider their own sexual development, to role-play, and to initiate
discussion about their clients.
Workshop C: VISUAL EROTICISM: A WORKSHOP FOR EDUCATORS, THERAPISTS
AND OTHERS
Olga Perez-Stable Cox, M.A.; Janice Hamilton, M.A.; Dick Skeen,
Ph.D.
Visual eroticism is an essential element of contemporary discourse
on sexuality. Visual elements provide a powerful means of accessing both
individual and cultural manifestations of desire. In this workshop we will
view a wide range of erotic imagery to see what such images reveal about
the social construction of eroticism. This is relevant to those teaching
courses on human sexuality, particularly those emphasizing a pluralistic
view of eroticism and desire. Therapists will also benefit from recognizing
the multiplicity inherent in sexual expression, and will be better able
to help clients explore their own eroticism while seeing their attitudes
and behaviors as part of a larger social world.
