Anal Eroticism and the Paradoxes of Power

This workshop is concerned with the complexities of power encountered by men and women who wish to experiment with anal stimulation. These power dynamics can either function as aphrodisiacs or inhibit a person's capacity for enjoyment--or both. First, we'll explore the conflict between the desire for anal experimentation and the cultural taboo that forbids it. Next we'll examine how gender-based top-bottom role expectations related to anal intercourse manifest, both positively and negatively, among opposite and same-sex partners. We'll consider the concerns of straight men who want to be anally penetrated, women who wish to be in control during anal sex, and gay men who idealize top-bottom versatility or are consistently drawn to incompatible roles. We'll also consider the potentials for anal pleasure beyond the power axis. Throughout the workshop, we'll look at how clinicians can facilitate productive discussions of these issues.
