Workshops do NOT assume or require medical knowledge, and are geared toward professionals in clinical, educational, counseling and nursing fields. Participation and self-disclosure are voluntary. Case material will not include identifying material.  You can earn 7 hours of CE by attending all three workshops.

9:00-12:00 Workshop A. Human Sexual Anatomy and Physiology (3 hours)
Martin Bastuba, M.D.: Clinical Instructor in Urology and Surgery, UCSD School of Medicine
This workshop will provide an overview of the major body systems involved in sexual desire, response, and function. These include the nervous system (e.g., spinal cord and pelvic nerves), vascular system (e.g., vasocongestion), endocrine system (e.g., thyroid, pituitary, gonadal hormones), and genitalia themselves. The workshop will examine how sexual function actually occurs, and how it is most commonly disrupted. The workshop will look at the sexual impact of common health/medical situations such as diabetes, alcoholism, chronic pain, hysterectomy, and prostate, uterine, and ovarian cancers.
Educational objectives: At the end of this workshop, participants will be able:
1. To describe how the human body creates vaginal lubrication and penile erection.
2. To describe the difference between voluntary and involuntary human sexual response.
3. To describe the sexual impact of several acute health care decisions.

1:00-3:00 Workshop B.  Hormones and Human Sexuality (2 hours)
Norma McCoy, Ph.D.: Professor of Psychology, San Francisco State University
This workshop will review the major sex hormones in both sexes, their source, and factors affecting the way they act in an individual. The workshop will examine the role that sex hormones play in sexual motivation, response, and attractiveness. The workshop will also examine how this role changes during the reproductive lifecycle, as well as the overall effects of aging on sexuality in both women and men. Finally, information will be provided on the effects of various products and regimens used in hormone replacement therapy for menopausal women. The emphasis will be on practical applications in clinical and educational settings.
Educational objectives: At the end of this workshop, participants will be able:
1. To describe the role of estrogen and testosterone in human sexual desire and function.
2. To identify three major theories about hormone replacement therapy for menopausal women.

3:15-5:15 Workshop C.  Human Sexual Pharmacology (2 hours)
James Goldberg, Ph.D.: Psycho-sexual Pharmacology Research Consultant
This session will cover aspects of prescription and nonprescription drugs that affect sexual function. Simple brain and neurochemical mechanisms will be explained. The nature, prevalence, and treatment of drug-induced sexual dysfunction will be reviewed, along with strategies to minimize these problems. The therapeutic value of new drugs marketed to treat sexual dysfunction will be described, along with the problems patients commonly experience with them. Gender differences regarding the nature and extent of sexual side effects will be highlighted. The interaction of sex hormones with neurotransmitters and peptides will be described in relation to aging and disease status.
Educational objectives: At the end of this workshop, participants will be able:
1. To describe how common drugs affect human sexual function and activity.
2. To describe the pros and cons of various drug treatments for human desire and arousal disorders.

This one-hour session examines the diverse ways that Christianity approaches sexuality, and the implications of various approaches. Educational objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to describe at least two ways that Christianity approaches sexuality.

8:30 Gary Taylor, Ph.D.
 Paradigms of Male Sexuality: Testicles, Penis, and Castration
This one-hour session examines the shift in the cultural idea of castration and accompanying changes in ideas about masculinity. Educational objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to describe the how the concept of masculinity and social contexts of castration change as a culture moves from pastoral to urban.
